Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead first to publish their
spend data
Windsor and
Maidenhead council has embraced the transparency agenda and has
lead the way on making its data more available to the public and
businesses.
RBWM believes transparency is a key condition and driver for the
delivery of council services. As a public funded organisation, the
council has a duty to the residents that it serves to be
transparent in its business operations and outcomes.

The launch of spotlightonspend featuring data from Windsor &
Maidenhead Borough Council generated significant positive press
coverage:
The Telegraph hailed the initiative by the Royal Borough of
Windsor and Maidenhead, whereby the council publishes its
expenditure data online through the 'Spotlight on Spend' data
analysis service, as 'be an inspiration' to Francis Maude, chair of
the newly formed Public Service Transparency Board.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council is an
example of how "existing information and simple technology" has
helped to both promote openness and transparency and increase
efficiency and drive down waste. eGov Monitor
"[spotlightonspend] is a great resource to hold us to account,
but it's also a really effective way for residents and local
businesses to see how much we have spent on what – not least
because they can propose better and more cost effective solutions."
Liam Maxwell
spotlightonspend is a "fantastic tool" which demonstrates to
other councils how they can implement the government's openness
initiatives. Providing the public with a means to understand and
easily read the data is "as important as transparency itself".

RBWM Council's model for a 'standardised format' for presenting
public data is "clear and easy to understand" and has "attracted
